Sandwich panels (sometimes called composite panels or structural insulation panels (SIP)) are composed of two layers of rigid material that are bonded to both sides of a lightweight core material. These three components work together. In other words, the combination of component characteristics is better than the performance that may be produced when used alone.
The lightweight core maintains the two faces in the correct position, resists shear forces and provides insulation, while the two faces have durability, weather resistance and impact resistance, and resist tensile and compressive forces in the plane.
