Structural steel, also known as machine structural steel, is used to manufacture mechanical parts that bear load or transmit power and force. The requirements for this kind of steel are high strength, proper toughness and good manufacturing process, such as forging and cutting. This kind of steel is usually used after proper heat treatment.
There are the following categories for use.
Quenched and tempered steel:
In order to meet the requirements of strength and toughness, carbon content of carbon tempered steel is 0.03-0.60%. Because of its low hardenability, it is only used to manufacture mechanical parts with small cross-section size, simple shape or low load. Alloy quenched and tempered steel is based on carbon quenched and tempered steel to add one or several alloying elements, the total amount of alloying elements added generally does not exceed 5%. Alloy quenched and tempered steel has good hardenability, can be hardened in oil, small quenching deformation, better strength and toughness, with the common steel grades 40Cr, 35CrMo, 40MnB and other important parts with large cross-section size and high load bearing, such as aeroengine spindle, crankshaft and connecting rod of high-speed diesel engine, main shaft of steam turbine and generator, and other commonly used alloy elements content steels, such as 40CrNiMo, 18CrNi. W, 25Cr2Ni4MoV, etc.
Carburizing steel:
Used for manufacturing parts requiring hard and wear-resistant surface and strong and impact-resistant core, such as chain pins, piston pins, gears, etc. Carburized steel has a low carbon content of 0.10-0.30% to ensure the core toughness of the parts. After carburizing, a high carbon and high hardness wear resistant layer can be formed on the surface. Alloy carburized steel can be used for more important parts. The commonly used steel grades are 20CrMnTi, 20CrMo, 20Cr, etc.
Nitriding steel:
Steel contains alloying elements with strong nitrogen affinity, such as Al-Cr, Mo and V, to facilitate nitrogen infiltration. The nitriding layer is harder, more wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant than the carburizing layer, but the nitriding layer is thinner. After nitriding, parts deform little, and are often used to manufacture precision parts with small allowable wear, such as grinder spindle, plunger pair, precision gear, valve stem, etc. The commonly used steel number is 38CrMoAl.
Low hardenability steel:
Special carbon steel with low residual elements such as manganese and silicon. When quenching, the central part of the parts made of this kind of steel is harder to harden than that of the ordinary carbon structural steel. The hardened layer basically distributes evenly along the surface contour of the parts, while the central part maintains a relatively soft and tough matrix to replace the carburized steel in manufacturing gears, sleeves and so on, which can save time-consuming carburizing process and energy consumption. In order to match the toughness of the central part with the hardness of the surface properly, the carbon content is generally 0.50-0.70%.
Free cutting steel:
One or more elements such as sulphur, lead, calcium and selenium are added to steel to reduce cutting force. Generally, the amount of added elements is less than a few thousandths of that. The added elements are combined with other elements in steel to form an inclusion which can reduce friction and promote chip breakage in the cutting process, so as to prolong tool life, reduce cutting force and improve surface roughness. As the addition of sulphur will reduce the mechanical properties of steel, it is generally only used to manufacture light-load parts produced in large quantities on automobiles. Modern free-cutting steel is also widely used to manufacture automobile parts due to its improved performance.
